SJC Student to Receive Recreation Scholarship

BROOKLYN, N.Y. May 6, 2010 St. Josephs College is proud to announce that Saran Christopher, a junior in the recreation studies program, will be the recipient of the Douglas MacArthur Mehserle Scholarship at this years Metropolitan Recreation and Parks Banquet on Wednesday, May 19, at the Manhattan Penthouse.

Ms. Christopher was selected to receive this award from Metropolitan New York Recreation & Park Society, Inc. (METRO) in recognition of her academic achievement as well as her demonstrated ability to provide quality services to clients. She gained practical experience in her field while working at the Menorah Home and Hospital and attending Kingsborough Community College.

"Saran Christopher is a thoughtful, sensitive person, who has demonstrated superior academic performance and potential, said Jeremy Cash, a recreation instructor at St. Josephs College. "She will be a great asset to the recreation therapy profession."

Metropolitan New York Recreation & Park Society, Inc. was founded in 1970 by Professor Lester Rhoads, who taught recreation courses at Kingsborough Community College. The mission of METRO is to promote principles and standards for the improvement of Recreation and Park programs, services and personnel, to encourage the development and education of all persons interested in working in the field of Recreation and Parks in New York City, and to influence institutions of higher learning to prepare an adequate and modern curriculum to fully prepare students to better carry out the recreation needs of all persons living in an urban area.
