SJC To Hold 30th Annual Scholarship Gala

BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, NY October 25, 2012 St. Josephs College (SJC) will hold its 30th Annual Scholarship Dinner on Thursday, November 8 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. This years business affair will honor Monsignor David L. Cassato with the 2012 Distinguished Citizen Award and the Honorable Joan Carey 61, with the 2012 Outstanding Alumna award. Proceeds from this event will benefit student scholarships.

David Cassato and former NYS Supreme Court Justice Joan Carey '61 at the 30th Annual Scholarship Gala, said Director of College Advancement James Graham. "Their impact on society has been extraordinary and they have been a tremendous inspiration to the communities they have served. We are grateful for their dedication to the mission of St. Josephs and we consider both to be outstanding examples for our students to emulate.
Monsignor David L. Cassato was ordained a priest and appointed as an assistant pastor to St. Ritas in Long Island City in 1972, where he served for 13 years. During this time, he developed a diversified youth program, a drop-in center for teenagers, a summer camp program for children and a retreat program for young adults. Subsequently, he worked as administrator and pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Williamsburg/Greenpoint. In 1988, Pope John Paul II granted Msgr. Cassato the title of Honorary Prelate, or monsignor. In 2001, he was appointed chaplain of the NYC Police Department and was assigned as pastor to the parish of St. Athanasius in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Msgr. Cassato earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception; he earned a Master of Science in Education with a focus on administration and supervision from Mercy College.
Judge Joan Carey began her long and prestigious career in 1968 as an assistant district attorney in Queens. She continued her career and served in a variety of positions, including, but not limited to, deputy chief of the Homicide Investigations Bureau, chief of the Supreme Court Trial Bureau and attorney-in-charge of the Rackets and Investigations Bureau. In 1993, she was named administrative judge of the Supreme Court Criminal Term in Manhattan, the largest criminal branch of the NYS Supreme Court. Judge Carey served as deputy chief administrative judge for NYC Courts from 1996 until her retirement in 2009, where she addressed the daily challenges of an urban court serving a population of over 8 million with more than 500 judges and nearly 8,000 non-judicial employees. A 1961 grad of SJC, Judge Carey earned a Bachelor of Laws from New York Law School in 1966. She was awarded an Honorary Juris Doctorate from SJC in 2002.
