SJC Brooklyn to Welcome Alex Vitale

November 15, 2018

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – November 15, 2018 - The Department of Journalism and New Media Studies (JNM) at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) in Brooklyn is pleased to announce that it will welcome noted scholar Alex Vitale to discuss his new book, “The End of Policing,” in conversation with Ted Hamm, Ph.D., JNM chair, on Wednesday, November 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Student Lounge.

“The criminal justice program at SJC Brooklyn aims to do more than simply prepare students for successful careers in law enforcement, it seeks to build whole, safe communities that reinforce the dignity and safety of all citizens,” said Michael Hanophy, Ph.D., interim executive dean and professor of biology at SJC Brooklyn. “I look forward to hearing Dr. Vitale's insights on community policing and restorative justice, as well as the insights of our faculty and students on this important and timely topic.”

Recent years have seen an explosion of protest against police brutality and repression among activists, journalists and politicians. The conversation about how to respond and improve policing has focused on accountability, diversity, training and community relations. Drawing on groundbreaking research from across the world, Vitale demonstrates how law enforcement has come to exacerbate the very problems it is supposed to solve.

This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase. For more information, contact Michael Banach at 718.940.5584 or [email protected].
