Transfer FAQs

What GPA is required for admission?

Generally, accepted transfer students have a GPA of 2.0 or better. For admission to education programs, (Child Study and Secondary Education), a 2.8 is required. For consideration into our Nursing program, a 3.0 GPA is required.

How many credits will transfer from my current/former institution to SJC?

SJC Brooklyn will accept up to 64 credits from a regionally accredited two-year school, and up to 90 credits from a regionally accredited four-year school. SJC will accept comparable courses in which a grade of C- or higher was earned. However, some courses may require a higher grade be achieved in order to satisfy certain major requirements. To fulfill the SJC residency requirement, all students must complete a minimum of 30 credits* at St. Joseph’s College to satisfy the College’s residency requirement.

Students who transfer to one of SJC’s professional studies programs may be eligible to receive additional transfer credit and may also be considered for prior experiential learning credit.

*Certain majors may require a minimum of 32 credits be completed at St. Joseph’s College.

How can I determine which credits will be applicable to my degree/major?

Transfer credit may not be applicable to your major; final determination will be made by the appropriate academic department chair or academic dean. It is recommended that you meet with a transfer counselor to review your transcripts and determine how your credits will apply.

What are the Core Requirements for a bachelor’s degree? Must they be completed at SJC?

Many students can fulfill core requirements with credits that transfer from other institutions.

How do I receive credit for Advanced Placement (AP) courses taken in high school?

SJC awards credit for AP courses.  Official test scores must be requested from the College Board and be sent directly to SJC.  Generally a score of 3 or higher will result in awarded credit.

Does my GPA from previous institutions transfer to SJC?

No.  Your GPA will only reflect the courses completed at SJC.

What are some of the major areas of study available at SJC?

St. Joseph’s College is a liberal arts institution where all majors are rooted in the liberal arts tradition.  We offer both traditional liberal arts majors as well as career oriented programs.  Review the majors and programs of study offered at SJC.
