Position Summary:

The Director is responsible for the overall leadership, administration and coordination of the Career Preparation and Professional Development office on the Brooklyn Campus. The individual in this position shall be able to lead a team which is responsible for ensuring that services provided assist students in developing effective job search skills needed to pursue meaningful careers while also assisting this same group in identifying and pursuing job and internship opportunities. A successful candidate shall be knowledgeable of current trends in relation to interview Preparation, Résumé/Cover Letter writing and have the ability to create and maintain partnerships with employer groups that lead to opportunities for students to enhance their educational and career goals.

Primary Duties

  1. Provide vision and leadership for a comprehensive student Career Preparation and Professional Development program.
  2. Provide career education through programs, events and services that empower students and alumni to attain their professional goals.
  3. Deliver individualized career counseling services that assist students in gaining self-awareness, choosing academic majors and careers, identifying graduate school options, and developing internship and job search skills for achieving career goals.
  4. Collaborate with faculty, staff, alumni and employers to promote opportunities for career exploration and experiential learning.
  5. Enhance relationships and foster partnerships with a broad base of business and employer groups to facilitate selection and hiring of current students and alumni.
  6. Implement and manage employer recruiting and marketing/branding strategies to gain appropriate visibility and connections on campus for the employer; Provide consultation for employers in devising effective, customized strategies for their campus relations and recruiting initiatives.
  7. Manage, update and utilize career management systems in the delivery of Career Preparation and Professional Development services.
  8. Train, supervise and evaluate professional, clerical and work-study staff.
  9. Serve as a representative and liaison to community organizations, reporting on, collaborating with, and connecting campus and community resources.
  10. Research and analyze employment trends of business communities to provide the campus community and graduates with information on changes in the job market.
  11. Ensure that all staff have and can communicate an appropriate knowledge base of occupational, career, and job information resources and technologies as well as knowledge of the labor market, employment trends, and recruiting strategies and techniques.
  12. Serves as a member of the Student Life leadership team; Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of the division’s mission and priorities.
  13. Provide direct services and programming aimed to increase retention, completion, satisfaction and overall well being.
  14. Design and implement programs that are measurable and aligned with the College’s mission.
  15. Maintain current with local, regional and national best practices.
  16. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs/Associate Vice President for Student Life.

Education Required:

Master’s Degree; Counseling, Student Development, Education, or Human Resources or related area is preferred.

Experience Required:

Minimum of 5 years experience working with College students

Skills, Characteristics Required for Position:

  • Demonstrated experience in professional career and/or placement services;
  • Ability to communicate successfully across departments and with various constituents, including external contacts;
  • Strong organizational skills, time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff and student workers;
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required.
