Institute for Religion Announces Third Lecture of Series

PATCHOGUE, NY February 21, 2013 The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life at St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce the continuation of its "Vatican II 50 Years Later lecture series with, "Women in Ministry on Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center on the Long Island Campus.

"Women in Ministry will be presented by Phyllis Zagano, Ph.D., an internationally acclaimed Catholic scholar, and a senior research associate and adjunct professor at Hofstra University. Dr. Zagano has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. A graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., she holds a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and master's degrees in communications, literature and theology. She is the author or editor of 15 books on religious studies and hundreds of articles and reviews in popular and scholarly journals. Her work has been translated into Czech, Indonesian, Italian, French and Spanish. Dr. Zagano is also general editor of the new Liturgical Press Spirituality in History series.

The lecture series reflects on Vatican II, formally known as the Second Vatican Council, which was assembled in 1962 to address relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the modern world, with the primary hope of mending the relationship between the Church and the Jewish community. By the time it concluded three years later, it had fundamentally altered the religious landscape.

Founded in 2001, The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life investigates and articulates the various roles religious institutions and individual people of faith can take to enhance community life. The Institute sponsors research projects and educational seminars, develops cooperative programs with various religious organizations in the community and searches for service opportunities in the community for faculty and students.
