SJC Hosts Health Care Lecture on Affordable Care Act

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. OCTOBER 21, 2013 As part of an ongoing series focusing on current health care topics, St. Josephs College (SJC) will host a presentation on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), "Obamacare and You: Are You Eligible and How to Sign Up, on Wednesday, October 23 from 12:40-1:30 p.m. and again from 6:30-8 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center located on the Colleges Long Island Campus.

John Sardelis, Dr.P.H., associate chairman of health care management at SJC, and Stacy Villagran, program director of the facilitated enrollment program and ACA navigator manager at Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC), will co-present during the afternoon session on this topic.

"Obamacare can provide very good health care coverage at low or no premiums for many individuals who lack health insurance, said Dr. Sardelis. "The law is complex, however, and recent technical troubles with the Exchanges have led to confusion and frustration. We will tell you who is eligible, how to figure out your premiums and other important information to help you determine if this program benefits you.

Dr. Sardelis is founder of the SJC Healthcare Center for Outreach, Research and Education (CORE), which assists Long Islanders in addressing health disparities, providing up-to-date information on public programs, and providing speakers on topical health issues. He is a member of the audit committee for the IPRO board of directors has been elected as chairman of the finance committee for the Affinity Health Plan board of directors.

Stacy Villagran is the program director for the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Councils Facilitated Enrollment Program, a New York State Department of Health grant-funded program designed to offer eligible individuals assistance with their Medicaid, Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus insurance program applications. Stacy has successfully secured nearly $1 million in grant funding since she designed the program for the Hospital Council in 1999.
