SJC Students Raise Money for American Cancer Society

October 24, 2018

BROOKLYN and PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – October 24, 2018 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is proud to announce that students from SJC Long Island and SJC Brooklyn participated in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks at Jones Beach and Coney Island on Sunday, October 21. Students from both campuses raised nearly $7,000 by soliciting donations from family, friends and fellow students through bake sales, car washes and many other events.

“I am always amazed by the generosity of our students who truly live out our mission of service and social responsibility every day,” said Donald Boomgaarden, Ph.D., SJC president. “These students should be very proud of their efforts and know that the funds they raised for the American Cancer Society will help save many lives.”

SJC student organizations that participated include SJC Long Island’s Dance Team, SJC Bears softball, Theta Phi Alpha, Delta Phi Epsilon, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, SJC Diamonds, Beta Upsilon Delta and Alpha Phi Delta: Epsilon Zeta.

Throughout the year, SJC students fundraise and volunteer for dozens of organizations and charitable causes. Students are also invited to participate in sponsored annual service learning and community service trips to locations such as Washington, D.C., Oklahoma, South Carolina, New Jersey and a trip abroad to Nicaragua.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it's most treatable.
