SJC to Host First-Ever L.I. Social Media Camp

June 17, 2010

PATCHOGUE, NY JUNE 15, 2010 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce that it will host the very first Social Media Camp for Long Islanders (SMCampLI) on Friday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bringing together professionals interested in the use and application of social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and LinkedIn, the event will take place on the Colleges Long Island Campus in Patchogue, NY.

SMCampLI invites both experts and novices in social media to connect with other professionals and students interested in enhancing their knowledge of modern social networking trends. Attendees will be given the opportunity to grow their businesses, enhance their personal brand and share ideas with like-minded individuals.

"What Im most excited about is watching what happens when the virtual meets the physical, said Jeff Namnum, lead organizer and a sponsor of SMCampLI. "Theres still a feeling in some circles that these social communication technologies separate and isolate people. I think its exactly the opposite. Were bringing together all these people who all live so close to one another, but if not for meeting through social media, they may never have gotten to meet in person.

In keeping with the informality of social media, the format of the camp is unlike most traditional conferences. Rather than feature a keynote address or lecture, SMCampLI is comprised of a series of intimate workshops and interactive discussions occurring simultaneously throughout the day. Participants can choose which seminars to attend based on their own personal interest and requirements. More than 25 topics will be highlighted, including the effects of social media on journalism, effectively launching a social media campaign and building a personal learning network.

"The popularity of social networking has become a widely accepted practice at all levels of business, including institutions of higher education, said Director of Public Relations Jessica McAleer Decatur. "St. Josephs College embraces the use of new media and technology and recognizes that social networking has become a fast growing communication trend. Were thrilled to be able to host the first Social Media Camp on Long Island.

Sponsors for this event include St. Josephs College, WordHampton Public Relations, Austin & Williams, Patch.com, Panera Bread, Namnum, the NY Islanders, T Mobile, Sofrito Media Group and the St. Josephs College Alumni Association.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. For more information or to register, contact Jeff Namnum at 516.882.7712, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.smcampli.com.
