SJC Welcomes Author Robert Goldman

October 02, 2011

PATCHOGUE, NY OCTOBER 3, 2011 The Criminal Justice Club at St. Josephs College is pleased to welcome Robert Goldman, J.D., Psy.D., co-author of No Room for Vengeance, to its Long Island Campus on Thursday, October 13. Dr. Goldman will give a presentation on restorative justice and sign copies of his book at 12:40 p.m. in the Board Room.

"St. Joseph's College Criminal Justice Club is honored to sponsor a book-signing event with Robert Goldman's book, No Room for Vengeance, which explores the restorative justice ideology in both philosophy and practice, said Barbara Morrell, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Criminal Justice Department at St. Josephs College. "The time has come to become smarter on crime, not tougher. Not only is it not economical, but there is quality research that confirms that other approaches to crime work better.

Robert Goldman connected with Victoria Ruvolo to write No Room for Vengeance. In 2004, Ms. Ruvolo was injured when a 20-pound frozen turkey was thrown through her windshield by then-teenager Ryan Cushing, shattering every bone in her face and nearly killing her. In the spirit of restorative justice, Ms. Ruvolo asked for leniency for Cushing, who received six months in jail and five years probation, instead of the initial possibility of 25-40 years incarceration. In their book, Dr. Goldman and Ms. Ruvolo tell the merciful story and explain different approaches to criminal consequences.

Dr. Goldman is a clinical psychologist for the Suffolk County Probation Department and is a consultant for its Thinking Errors, Anger Management, Social Skills and Talking Empathy (TASTE) Program, which focuses on juveniles in Suffolk County. He holds a Psy.D. degree in School-Community Psychology from Hofstra University and is the founder of Psychological Restorative Solutions, P.C., a corporation that develops programs that facilitate peaceful resolutions to conflict and promote personal growth.

This event is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be served. For more information, contact Dr. Barbara Morrell at 631.687.4582 or visit www.sjcny.edu.
