SJC Long Island Adds New TESOL Programs to Course Offerings

January 22, 2021

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – January 21, 2021 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce the addition of two new Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) degree programs to its course offerings: a Master of Arts in TESOL and an Advanced Certificate in TESOL.

“We are pleased to offer these TESOL programs to future educators,” said Eileen Jahn, Ph.D., executive dean of SJC Long Island. “SJC has a well-known history of producing the best and brightest teachers, and the addition of these programs will allow us to continue with that tradition as we expand and embrace today’s world.”

The M.A. in TESOL helps teachers cultivate the skills and dispositions that will enable them to be effective K-12 educators. Teaching English to speakers of other languages is a vital component in the field of education, and this program provides a balance of theory and practice which will enhance the future careers of educators. Geared toward students who earned their bachelor’s degree in child study or who had a concentration in adolescence education, the M.A. in TESOL at SJC prepares educators through the use of a diverse range of topics, including required courses in childhood special education and literacy and cognition. Students with bachelor’s degrees in child study gain exposure to clinical work in middle and high schools, and vice versa.

The Advanced Certificate in TESOL Program is geared toward educators who already earned their master’s degree. The program will prepare students to teach English to speakers of other languages through fieldwork and student teaching, gaining firsthand experience in TESOL classrooms in grades K-12.
