Campus Ministry Events
Campus Ministry's many events, in conjunction with other areas of student life, ensures that St. Joseph’s can be your home away from home.
Our team hosts activities that build life-giving relationships. Social events, such as festive luncheons, ski trips, sporting events and plays, encourage students to come together and build friendships with people of varying backgrounds and interests.
Here's a quick overview at what semester events our Office of Campus Ministry offers.
All Masses are generally at 1 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Chapel inside O'Connor Hall, Fr. Frank is our celebrant. At the beginning of each semester, the official celebratory liturgy is held to bestow a blessing on the SJC community for the school year. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Chapel is set up with soft music, meditations and candlelight as a peaceful, quiet environment for all of SJC.
Make A Difference Day
SJC’s off-campus community service day. We go to various sites and agencies to do service. We start at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria with coffee and bagels. Last year, 73 SJC volunteers visited a number of community non-profits and support agencies to help them. Over 350 combined hours of community service was done by these volunteers across Long Island.
Global Listening Day
Inside the Muriel and Virginia Pless Auditorium, we have a live Skype session with an Afghan Peace Youth Group. There will be Afghan style Breakfast provided by the Office of Global Studies.
The Special Olympics
We host the NY Special Olympics in the Danzi Athletic Center. Last year, 114 SJC volunteers changed the Danzi Center into a day of celebratory athletic competitions for 35 special athletes and coaches.
Fall Food/Thanksgiving Drive
We collect and deliver cases of food and donations to local families and outreach centers, while disseminating information about hunger, homelessness and need. Numerous individuals, offices and clubs participate. For the three weeks before Thanksgiving, SJC will be collecting food, store gift cards and holiday items. They will be delivered to local agencies and families in need.
Pumpkin Pie Bake-a-Thon
Staff and students bake 50 pumpkin pies and deliver them to soup kitchens and food pantries. We start with a pie baking lesson and then break into teams and bake dozens of pies. Then we deliver them to the families in need and the agencies that support them.
Holiday Gift Drive
We adopt 30 families for the holidays, advertise their wishes, coordinate the gift-giving (from all across the campus!) and volunteers pack and deliver the gifts to the families before the holiday.
Soup Kitchen Cooking
Campus Ministry does cooking at St Joseph the Worker soup kitchen every third Tuesday from 4-6 p.m., with some prep and a few volunteers or a club or organization. Two or three times a month — with two or three partners usually from SJC staff, faculty or administration — we cook dinner for the staff and residents at Hope House.
This is a memorial presentation of the night that began the Holocaust. Members of SJC’s Religious Studies department and our local Jewish community will lead this event.
Community Service Celebration
This celebratory luncheon recognizes the SJC members who have been exemplary in their service efforts.
Breakfast With Santa and Elves
Alumni will host an annual breakfast in the Danzi Center for alumni and children. There is usually a visitor from the North Pole available for pictures!
Christmas Gift /WISH Drive
Starting after Thanksgiving, SJC will have the wishes of the 30+ families we adopt for the holidays listed on ornaments on the trees. Staff, students, faculty and administration help collect and wrap the gifts. Usually student/elves and Santa will deliver them to the families on December 23.
Students can use the events calendar within the Student Involvement and Leadership portal page for event details.
In addition, every Monday through SJC email, you will receive that week's events with more information.
