From Romania to Australia, Oxford to Costa Rica, St. Joseph's College students are venturing to new lands and gaining new life experiences.
Unlike most colleges, St. Joseph's College has valued study abroad by funding student study abroad experiences in faculty-led and/or semester long programs. This has made study abroad accessible to all students. St. Joseph's College scholarships apply to tuition abroad. The college also grants a significant number of $500-$2,000 stipends for faculty-led programs.
“Studying abroad brought me to some of my best friends and I got to see parts of the world that most people will never experience. It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and every SJC student should take advantage of it!”
“My study abroad experience allowed me to grow as an individual. It exceeded my expectations as it allowed me to excel in learning about different cultures, viewpoints and methods of learning. I also enjoyed all that Australia had to offer outside of the classroom, for example social life, beaches, hiking, sports and adventures.”
“I always wanted to do something abroad, whether it was a semester or a spring break trip. After my spring break trip to Costa Rica I was going to do everything in my power to return. With the help of Linda Lubranski from the Office of Global Studies, I found the opportunity to intern with AGLOCAM, a growing educational company.”
“No matter what you learn from books, experiencing a culture is so much different than anyone could ever describe. Someone once told me ‘ordinary experiences produce ordinary stories.’ I want to have extraordinary experiences and amazing stories to tell.”
“For so many reasons England shattered my expectations. I can easily say my two weeks spent at Oxford wound up being among the most interesting and rewarding weeks of my trip.”
“France was an experience of a lifetime and I’m so glad I was able to participate in it. The trip was part of an honors art class filled with an in depth look at French art.”
“It was an amazing experience learning about [Grecian] culture … I was able to make so many memories with my friends that I know I will cherish forever.”
“What I really enjoyed was gaining a deep understanding of the country through our intimate contact with nature, the Icelandic Sagas and conversations with locals. The best part was traveling with my friends and experiencing unforgettable moments with them. We developed deeper bonds with each other and shared some lifelong memories. It was something I would not be able to have if I was visiting Iceland on my own.”
“My life will never be the same. I have made it past the language barrier, and I have learned to make a difference in the lives of severely disabled children who speak no English.”
“I really wanted to go abroad this summer, but I also wanted to do science-related work. So, I searched for programs and opportunities where I could have both – and get close to a full ride financially.”
“I never thought a foreign city in a foreign country where I don’t speak the language could ever feel like home, but it has and I think it always will. I am so blessed to have found in Krakow a place that is as much an adventure as it is a safe haven.”
“There is no doubt in my mind that this trip to Romania changed my life. I truly feel as if I have a new perception on so many things in so many different aspects of my life.”
“I knew since before I even started at SJC freshman year that I wanted to participate in any international programs the school offered. Then the school decided to apply our scholarships to a semester abroad, which was when I started looking into schools to study at. I knew that I wanted to study in not such a mainstream city and The University of Glasgow was the perfect fit for me. It is incredibly beautiful and historic and in an urban area as well, meaning it would be easy to travel from.”
“Our daily courses were specifically chosen for us to understand various aspects of Taiwanese and Chinese culture. We were interested in our courses because we were able to experience these customs first-hand. From making my own dumplings to visiting Buddhist temples, I genuinely felt that I have experienced Taiwan.”
