BROOKLYN VOICES PRESENTS MATT TAIBBI

October 12, 2017

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – October 12, 2017 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC), in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore, is pleased to welcome Matt Taibbi to present his latest work, I Can’t Breathe: A Killing On Bay Street, in conversation with Toure, writer, music journalist, cultural critic and television personality, on Wednesday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. in SJC Brooklyn’s Tuohy Hall Auditorium.

“With his investigative reports on the financial industry in the aftermath of the Great Recession and his many feature articles in Rolling Stone, Taibbi has earned a place in the upper echelon of investigative journalists,” said Michael Hanophy, Ph.D., interim executive dean at SJC Brooklyn. “I look forward to hearing his insights into the tragic events of the Eric Garner case.”

On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died on a Staten Island sidewalk after a police officer put him in what has been described as an illegal chokehold during an arrest for selling bootleg cigarettes. The final moments of Garner’s life were captured on video and seen by millions. His agonized last words, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry for the nascent Black Lives Matter protest movement. Taibbi’s deeply reported retelling of these events liberates Eric Garner from the abstractions of newspaper accounts and lets us see the man in full, with all his flaws and contradictions intact.

Tickets for this event are $30 and include a copy of the book. Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity to have the book signed by Taibbi. To RSVP, click here.
