Johnson is a member of St. Joseph's College board of trustees, Professor Emeritus of Fordham and the National Catholic Reporter has called Johnson "one of the country's most prominent and respected theologians." Sister Johnson is the author of numerous acclaimed books, the recipient of fifteen honorary doctorates, and a former president of both the Catholic Theological Society of America and the American Theological Society.
