SJC AWARDED GRANT TO COMBAT VIOLENCE

BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – February 2, 2018 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it was awarded a grant of more than $299,000 from the Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women. The grant will allow both SJC Long Island and SJC Brooklyn to develop programs and policies to prevent and address sexual assault, stalking, domestic violence and dating violence over the next three years. 

As part of the development of this grant, SJC created partnerships with four outside agencies with expertise in this field: Wyckoff Heights Medical Center Violence Intervention and Treatment Program in Brooklyn;  The Crime Victims Center in Ronkonkoma; The Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk, Inc. (VIBS) Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center in Bohemia, NY and the New York State Police Campus Sexual Assault Victims Unit in Brentwood. These organizations have committed to provide training; serve as off-campus victim services and advocacy providers; provide guidance and information to victims; and serve as a liaison to local police and criminal justice system. 

“The unfortunate reality is that countless students are impacted by violence on a daily basis,” said Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., SJC president. “This grant will allow SJC to partner with important organizations, advocate for victims and be a part of their healing process. Students who experience these crimes are impacted the most significantly, but all students, faculty and staff will be impacted by the enhanced response to and prevention of sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking on SJC’s two campuses.”

Committed to the development of a comprehensive program over the next three years with the support of the DOJ and others, the overall goals of the program will be to help broaden campus and community engagement, reduce the number of cases of sexual assault, stalking, domestic violence and dating violence, and to ensure effective intervention for survivors of these crimes with strong emphasis on survivor-centered services.
