SJC Brooklyn Partners with Tzu Chi to Provide SAT Prep

March 11, 2016

BROOKLYN, NY – March 11, 2016 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will partner with the Tzu Chi Foundation to provide free SAT prep classes to local high school students at the Foundation’s office in lower Manhattan. These classes will be targeted to recently arrived immigrant high school juniors and seniors who possess academic promise but require additional help with the verbal component of the exam.

”We are delighted to partner with Tzu Chi for this SAT prep class in order to serve learners in Chinatown and to prepare them for college-level work following graduation,” said Jill Rehmann, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs at SJC Brooklyn. “With its ACES program and the SJC College Experience, SJC Brooklyn has a commitment to preparing students for academic success, and looks forward to working with Tzu Chi to accomplish this.”

The classes will run from March 17 to April 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. and will provide students with in-depth preparation for the verbal component of the SAT exam. Designed for students for whom English is a second or even third language, the aim of this course is to review all sections of the current test and offer strategies for improvement in all seven areas, including the essay.  There will be a special focus on vocabulary acquisition, grammar and usage, and, most importantly, reading comprehension.

“The Tzu Chi Foundation has partnered with St. Joseph’s College so that students in our communities who want to go to college can prepare for the SAT at no cost,” said John Cheng of Tzu Chi. “Tzu Chi is grateful to St. Joseph’s College for providing this SAT prep program for students in our communities and we believe our partnership will enable students to fulfill their dreams and strive for a brighter future.”
