Update on the Coronavirus

February 28, 2020

In response to the recent worldwide news reports regarding the spread of novel (new) coronavirus (named “2019-nCoV”), St. Joseph’s College would like to provide its community with information, resources and recommendations currently made available by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health.

While there are currently no confirmed cases of coronavirus in our region, it is important we remain vigilant in our efforts to protect the health and safety of the SJC community. As such, we are sharing the following information and resources with you.

SYMPTOMS
Human coronaviruses commonly cause mild-to-moderate illness in people. At this time, the CDC believes symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure. Symptoms may include:

•    Cough
•    Shortness of breath
•    Fever

*If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately.

PREVENTION
There are currently no vaccines available to protect against human coronavirus infection. To reduce your risk of infection, please follow the below best practices recommended by the CDC:

•    Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
•    Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
•    Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
•    Stay home when you are sick.
•    Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
