Come explore St. Joseph’s collaborative and supportive environment. We understand the challenges teachers face today in meeting the literacy needs of their students. Our program dives right in and teaches our aspiring educators and reading specialists new and thoughtful ways to provide effective literacy instruction for the diverse population of children in schools across New York and the nation.
Our 36-credit program examines a wide array of educational issues – through cultural, instructional and social perspectives – to give you access to the insights and knowledge needed to thrive in the education world.
Accelerate Your Career
Students who complete an M.A. in Literacy and Cognition at St. Joseph’s College can complete the following programs at an accelerated rate:
- School Building Leader Advanced Certificate: Prepares individuals for such careers as principal, assistant principal, vice principal, associate principal, director, supervisor or department chair, coordinator or unit head (12 credits instead of 15).
- School District Leader Advanced Certificate: Provides skills and training necessary to pursue a career as a superintendent, district superintendent, assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent or associate superintendent (21 credits instead of 24).
- M.A. in Educational Leadership with Critical Consciousness: Geared toward individuals seeking any of the above-listed positions (24 credits instead of 33).

The SJC Brooklyn Literacy and Cognition Experience
Hands-on Learning: Our students in the Literary and Cognition program receive 50 hours of practicum experience.
Intimate Class Settings: The Literary and Cognition program features small classes and a blend of online and face-to-face courses. Get ready for an in-depth study of assessments and treatments for struggling students and to learn how to incorporate digital technology in your future classroom!
A Range of Opportunity: At the end of the program, our Literary and Cognition students will have the necessary qualifications for a literacy teacher certification (birth – 6th grade).
