By examining religion in the context of society, history and culture, the Department of Religious Studies helps deepen student’s knowledge of various religious traditions. St. Joseph’s courses enable students to appreciate the beliefs of all people within their cultural and historical development. Religious studies students also study the current complex issues of society from both a theological and moral viewpoint.
MAJOR IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND PHILOSOPHY
Religious studies/philosophy majors must complete 36 credits in the two departments, including four specific courses in each area. An additional 9 credits must be earned in the discipline of choice and the senior thesis must be completed within that discipline. However, students who wish to combine this major with a major in another area can explore the possibility of a cross-disciplinary thesis. Click here for more information.
The religious studies minor can enhance personal interests or help students pursue graduate work in religious studies or theology. It could also be helpful for students who wish to teach in a religiously affiliated school or become engaged in a form of a church-based ministry.
The minor can also complement other majors. For example, a history or political science major could develop a specialization in world religions.
