SJC Alumna Featured in Nursing Publication

PATCHOGUE, NY OCTOBER 19, 2012 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce that Lorraine Mercado 06 has been published in Advance for Nurses, a series in a collection of online publications and resources for healthcare professionals of all specialties.

"We are all proud that Lorraines work has been published, said John Sardelis, Dr.P.H., associate chairperson in the Department of Health Administration at St. Josephs College. "This continues a long line of academic and professional success by our graduates.

In her article, "Strategies for Nurse Retention: A high nurse turnover rate is an expensive problem for any healthcare facility, Ms. Mercado, a certified registered nurse, explores the issue of nurse retention and what strategies can be used to improve it. With a focus on proper orientation and training, less workplace bullying and incentives for longevity, she believes that retaining nurses can be beneficial and more cost-effective for healthcare facilities.

Ms. Mercado earned a B.S. in community health and human services from SJCs Long Island Campus and is currently a charge nurse of a male adolescent behavioral health unit in New York.
