November 04, 2010

PATCHOGUE, NY November 5, 2010 The cross country teams at the Long Island Campus of St. Josephs College placed high at the Colleges Annual Invitational on Saturday, October 23 at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, NY and then, as a follow up to their outstanding performance, they all donated their sneakers to charity.

"Not only did we win but we also collected running shoes for a charity and are sending almost 200 pairs of used running shoes to Africa," SJC cross country coach Jim Crowley said.

In the past, the first 50 male and female athletes to reach the finish line would receive t-shirts, but this year, t-shirts were given to all participants from the 29 colleges attending the meet who donated their sneakers after the daylong event. SJC received 100 percent participation from its womens and mens cross country runners, totaling more than 200 pairs of donated shoes to runners in Kenya for Shoe4Africa.

Shoe4Africa is a non-profit organization that collects used running shoes to provide children in impoverished areas of Africa with footwear to prevent disease. For more information about Shoe4Africa, visit www.shoe4africa.org.
