SJC to Host Suffolk County Golden Games

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. MAY 8, 2013 St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will host the annual Suffolk County Golden Games, an athletic competition among senior citizens, on Friday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the John A. Danzi Athletic Center located on the Colleges Long Island Campus in Patchogue, N.Y.

Founded in 1989 by Karen Nash, director of therapeutic recreation at Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the annual event brings residents from 13 Suffolk County nursing home facilities together to compete in physical activities, such as wheelchair relay, balloon volleyball, basketball throw, distance throw and bowling. The games open with an Olympic-style ceremony and salute to the American flag. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded for all events.

"The Suffolk County Golden Games Association promotes more than just medals for our participants, said Linda Schoepfer, director of Therapeutic Recreation at Westhampton Care Center and Suffolk County Golden Games board member. "This event is an all-around positive experience that provides competitive energy, pride in doing ones personal best, inspiration to others, confidence from achievement, fitness, friendship and fun.

PATCHOGUE, NY – MARCH 26, 2010 – St. Joseph’s College is pleased to announce that it will once again host the Suffolk County Golden Games, an all-day athletic competition for Suffolk County senior citizens, on Friday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in its state-of-the-art Danzi Athletic Center at the Long Island Campus. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.

Teams representing 12 nursing home residences across the county with nine residents on each team will compete in physical events such as the wheel chair relay, distance throw, volley ball and bowling tournaments. Participating nursing homes this year include the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Our Lady of Consolation, St. Catherine’s of Sienna, Nursing Care Center at Medford, San Simeon by the Sound, Broadlawn Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation, Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Long Island State Veterans Home, Island Rehabilitation & Nursing center, Westhampton Care Center, East Neck Nursing & Rehabilitation and St. Johnland Nursing Center, Inc.

“This event offers participants an active and wonderful social experience in a healthy and safe environment,” said Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate professor and chairperson of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at St. Joseph’s College. “Many of the competitors practice yearlong for this event and participants are able to develop new relationships by meeting people from various facilities throughout Suffolk County.”

Founded in 1989 by Director of Therapeutic Recreation at the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center Karen Nash, CTRS, this year’s Suffolk County Golden Games will run in conjunction with National Nursing Home Week, a nationwide event celebrated during the second week of May to honor those who work tirelessly to provide a supportive and caring environment for and make a positive difference in the lives of nursing home residents across the country.
