Student Veterans Honored by LI Ducks

July 25, 2016

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – July 25, 2016 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that SJC Long Island’s Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter was honored by the Long Island Ducks and their Heroes of the Game program at Bethpage Ballpark on July 20.

“I nominated SJC's SVA and our military-connected students in order to recognize their military service and the sacrifices they have made while embarking on a new mission of higher education,” said Erin D’Eletto, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services at SJC Long Island. “It was wonderful to see the SVA officers receive special recognition for their exceptional club leadership and their dedication to SJC’s military-connected students, the College and the community.”

In 2015, the Long Island Ducks, Suffolk County Office of Veteran Affairs and New York Community Bank (NYCB) created the Heroes of the Game program, which publicly recognizes local veterans and active duty service men and women at each home game played at Bethpage Ballpark. In addition, each hero receives 10 complimentary tickets to the game at which they will be honored, so that they may bring their family and friends along with them.

“We are proud to honor those who have fought and continue to fight, to protect our freedom every day,” said Michael Pfaff, Long Island Ducks president and general manager. “Thanks to NYCB and Suffolk County, we will be able to create a special memory for the friends and families of each hero we recognize, as well as for each and every Ducks fan at the ballpark.”

The SJC Student Veterans of America is a student organization at SJC Long Island that aims to promote an understanding of veterans and their vastly unique experiences, as well as the issues they face upon returning home. Veteran and non-veteran students and faculty are involved, holding events and raising funds for charity. For more information, email [email protected].
